Key points · 7
- State verbs describe a continuing state and carry conversation: רוֹצֶה (want), צָרִיךְ (need/must), יָכוֹל (can), עוֹשֶׂה (do/make), יוֹדֵעַ (know), מֵבִין (understand).
- They are present-tense participles, so they agree in gender/number: רוֹצֶה / רוֹצָה / רוֹצִים / רוֹצוֹת.
- Most take an infinitive — 'want/need/can to do X': אֲנִי רוֹצֶה לִלְמֹד ('I want to learn').
- צָרִיךְ + infinitive = 'must/need to'; צָרִיךְ + noun = 'need (a thing)': אֲנִי צָרִיךְ לָלֶכֶת / אֲנִי צָרִיךְ כֶּסֶף.
- יָכוֹל ('can/able') is irregular: יָכוֹל / יְכוֹלָה / יְכוֹלִים / יְכוֹלוֹת.
- יוֹדֵעַ ('know') ends in a guttural ע → furtive patach; the f.sg is יוֹדַעַת. מֵבִין is Hif'il ('understand').
- In live speech, stack these with אֵת (definite objects) and inflected prepositions (לִי, אִתְּךָ, עָלָיו) from Weeks 6–7.
